Welcome
I'm Dr. Mark Hudson and I specialise in supporting families where a child has developmental differences.
Since qualifying as a Clinical Psychologist over 10 years ago, I have often found that parents struggle to access help from services, and where they do, they might not receive support which is tailored to their child’s needs. Parents often receive behavioural advice, but may be left feeling unsure about how to implement this in their daily lives. Families are increasingly calling for an approach which recognises all of their needs, whether this is the referred child, siblings, or parents themselves.
My approach is based on the science of emotional development and family psychology. This means that I start by understanding difficulties as being developmental in nature – they often arise when children are struggling with skills like understanding and regulating emotions, or making sense of other people’s minds. I believe strongly that most parents want the best for their children and work hard to meet their emotional needs, however children who are developing differently tend to require an enhanced caregiving approach.
This approach might be different to what parents are used to, and what may have worked well with other siblings.
I offer family-focused support which involves understanding your needs as parents, recognising the parenting journey you have been on, and considering your child’s particular developmental strengths and needs. The therapeutic support I offer is tailored to each family, and may involve sessions with parents or children themselves, parent-child sessions, or the whole family together.
If your child’s needs are unclear, but you feel as though they are struggling in areas such as their learning, relationships with others, communication, or their ability to regulate emotions, then a clinical psychology assessment could help. I offer comprehensive psychological assessments which lead to a formulation of the difficulties – a shared understanding of your child based on psychological science. Depending on your child’s needs, the assessment may also include a diagnosis of a neurodevelopmental condition, such as autism or learning disability (also called intellectual disability).
